Description
The arranger has made versions of a gorgeous set of hymns for a fairly unusual ensemble.
In For the Beauty of the Earth, the harps begin by ornamenting the organ’s chordal rendition of Verse 1. Then the harps take over for a short sojourn in 7/8 time. Short thumb glisses reinforce the jazzy feel of the time signature. The pulse also changes from 3 + 2 + 2 to 2 + 2 + 3. The organ spans the transition back to 4/4 and up a key while the harps move pedals. The last verse is triumphant, featuring sextuplets in the organ RH, large chords in the harp parts, and plenty of rich chordal chromaticism.
Be Thou My Vision and Debussy’s La cathedrale engloutie are side by side the entire way through this fascinating arrangement. The united resonance of the harps and organ bring out a new facet of the classic Debussy piano sketch. The melody line crops up in unexpected places – first in the organ pedals, then in snippets by the harps, in full chordal majesty in the organ while the harps play the original “organ” part, and finally in octaves in the harps above the rippling organ LH.
In This Is My Father’s World, the introduction begins with organ sixteenth notes and culminates in a triple harp gliss. A chordal Verse 1 follows. Verse 2 speaks of birds raising their carols to God, and the tone painting displays this exquisitely with sixteenth and triplet ornaments to the melody. Finally, a cascading waterfall of harp triplets leads to toccata-style organ sextuplets underneath the melody in octaves.
Included are a score, organ part, and three harp parts. Pedals are carefully marked in the harp parts along with occasional pedal charts. PEDAL HARP TRIO + ORGAN, EARLY ADVANCED/ADVANCED.
