Description
From the arranger:
“Most of the well-known tunes in The Nutcracker come from the second act, where the ‘Land of Sweets’ is ruled by the Sugar Plum Fairy. However, I have also included two tunes from the first act in this publication. The ten dances are presented in the same order as they occur in the actual ballet.
“The orchestral score was consulted in the preparation of these arrangements to capture the ‘flavor’ of each dance and assist with notation. In order to reduce page turns and eliminate some chromatic or repetitive sections of dances, the dances were shortened. Five of the ten dances have been transposed from their original keys (1) to accommodate harpers who employ a C tuning and (2) to place the tunes into only the keys of C, G, and D in order to minimize lever movements between pieces. Minimal lever changes are indicated between the staves with a diamond-shaped notehead and pedal changes are placed below the bass staff.
“A separate leaflet has been provided for the instrumental soloist. However, if preferred, they may read from the harp score as page turns have been planned accordingly.
“The abbreviation V.S. used at the end of some pages means ‘volti subito,’ which is an instruction to turn the page quickly, as the music continues on the next page.
“The Italian tempo descriptions are those used by Tchaikovsky. Dynamics, fingering, expressive markings, and metronome markings are provided as an aid to performance. However, the harper should use whatever dynamics, fingerings, expressions, and tempos suit them, no matter what this book indicates!”
