Description
There are 4 energetic verses, separated by interludes that introduce the tone of the next verse. Dynamics and rhythms vary from soft and controlled to expressing great excitement. The melody is equally divided between parts. Harmonics and Bdlc add to color the sounds. Ensembles of varying levels of proficiency could divide the piece into sections. Verse One could play with any of the other three verses.
This popular children’s Christmas Carol celebrates the third century Turkish St. Nicholas who was famous for leaving bags of coins on doorsteps of those in need. Emily Huntington Miller published her poem, Lilly’s Secret, in The Little Corporal Magazine in December 1865. It’s believed that James R Murray set the poem to music in 1874 renaming it Jolly Old Saint Nicholas.
