In December 1868 Lewis Redner struggled to write music to the poem Phillip Brooks had given him for the next Sunday’s service. In his sleep he heard the tune. In the morning he filled in the harmony. Upon hearing it at church, Richard McCauley, bookstore owner, asked permission to sell it.
