Description
Aura Lea, published Cincinnati before the Civil War began in 1861, became a favorite of both sides of the conflict to sing around campfires. It was performed by minstrel groups, glee clubs, barbershop quartets, radio stations and the U.S. Military Academy at West Point set new lyrics to the melody, renaming it Army Blue. The title morphed into Aura Lee along the way. It has appeared in movies and TV shows.
In 1956 Elvis recorded his version of the melody with new lyrics, naming it Love Me Tender.
