Description
This is known as the first piece Turlough Carolan composed. The title translates into either Little Fairy and Big Fairy or Little Fairy Hill and Big Fairy Hill. Nearly the same melody is found in the 1810 Collection of Ancient Irish Airs (O’Neill, Bunting, and Mulholland) under the name The Bonny Cuckoo (Roud 24351).
It is in the key of D. You can hear the fairies lightly fluttering around. Their colorful Baroque conversation moves between parts or in parallel. At times their conversation is (‘fairy’) emphatic! The piece ends with the Wizard turning the fairies into hills. The melody is divided evenly between parts. Dynamics are clearly marked. Score & Parts, 15 pages.
