In 1849 English organist Henry John Gauntlett set the poem written by Cecil Francis Alexander to a melody he had named “Irby” which is now known as Once In Royal David’s City. The French carol, Il est né or He is Born was first published in 1862 although it is considered to be an ancient carol. The two carols are very similar in structure and phrasing.
