About this recording: The Corona virus made studio recording too risky; moreover one of the harpists – Alyssa Reit – lives on the other side of the country. (The other three of us are Californians.) So the three of them made home recordings, which were then polished up by sound engineer Lou Judson. My three tracks are all from my solo CD “All Over the Map.” All the music in this album is available in print, from Melody’s Traditional Music.
Alyssa Reit has worked as an independent performer, composer, arranger, and storyteller in the New York area for over 40 years. As a harpist she has performed with artists ranging from the world renowned vocal quartet Anonymous 4, legendary dancer Martha Clarke, and the Metropolitan Opera, to contemporary music groups and traditional Irish bands. Her compositions and arrangements are performed internationally, from Japan to Australia, by performers including harp ensembles, string orchestras, and brass quintets. Her main body of work has been creating theatrical-musical settings of myths, classic stories, and fairy tales. She recorded these tracks with a Merlin harp.
Amelia Romano: An eclectic blend of austere serenity and kinetic vibrancy, Amelia Romano takes what is known about conventional harp and surpasses every time. Pulling from her roots in the cultural hotbed of San Francisco, Amelia not only plays music from the repertoire but reprises them and creates originals. Latin American music, jazz and classical are all genres that she touches, and her music defnes its own path. She recorded these tracks with a Thormahlen Swan harp
Mitch Landy: I began playing non-Celtic, non-folk music on my first harp (a Lyon & Healy “folk harp” with lousy tone & lousy levers), at a time when very few were doing any such thing. It was Celtic music (specifically Alan Stivell) that first drew me to the harp, but a classical music education – and the lack of a piano – prompted me to expand my harp domain. Thus the title of my solo CD “All Over the Map,” from which these three pieces are drawn. They were played on a Triplett “Celtic” harp. Since then, I have endeavored to broaden the lever harp repertoire, and that is the primary purpose of this collection.
