Description
From the arranger:
“En Bateau “Sailing” by Debussy is an arrangement for 4 harps (two pedal harps and 2 lever harps) based upon a Petite Suite for four-hand piano. It has been transcribed many times, most notably for orchestra by a colleague of Debussy, Henry Busser in 1907. The Suite, which was composed from 1886 to 1889, was first performed on 2 February 1889 by Debussy and pianist-publisher Jacques Durand at a salon in Paris. It may have been written by request of Durand for a piece that would be accessible for skilled amateurs. The simplicity of the piece is in stark contrast with the modernist works that Debussy was writing at the time.
“The piece is written in 6/8 rhythm with a clear sense of the rocking motion of a boat on the water. En Bateau is the first movement of the suite written in an Andantino tempo. Along with the second movement, it is based upon the setting of a poem from the volume Fetes Galante by Paul Verlaine (1844-1896).
“The book comes with the director’s score and the individual parts for the four harps. The individual parts may be duplicated for the various players in your group.”
Two parts are for pedal harp (6 pages each), and two are for larger lever harps (4 pages each).
