Description
Penned in 1841 in Essex, England, Sarah Flower Adams (1805-1848) wrote the lyrics for her sister, Eliza Flower, to set to music for use in their Unitarian Church Services and hymnals. The lyrics has been set to various hymn tunes, but the most common setting was Lowell Mason’s “Bethany” in 1856.
