This is a unique book, because the arrangements are distinctly gospel. Louise has been working with a gospel pianist, and so these arrangements are delightfully accurate in their feel. They are intermediate level, for lever or pedal harp, and expertly notated. Lyrics are included, as well as personal notes from Louise. INTERMEDIATE, ALL HARPS.
Down by the Riverside, Just a Closer Walk with Thee, Shall we Gather by the River, Lord I want to be Christian, Little Church in the Wildwood, Amazing Grace. Please note that there are two versions of Amazing Grace; gospel version and a modern pedal harp version with embellished chords.
Excerpt from Louise Trotter: “Your lever harp needs to be tuned in Eb, C or F. Lever changes are indicated by diamond shapes placed exactly where the left hand needs to change the lever. Pedal changes are placed below the staff. Vertical brackets are indicated where all fingers are played at once, rather than rolled as most harp chords are played. Harmonics are marked where they are played, not where they sound.
In “Just a Closer Walk with Thee”, measures 6 and 7 have several lever changes close together. In measures 14 and 15 the same melody appears again, where I altered the notes to eliminate those awkward lever changes. You may choose the version you like best and play them both the same. Amazing Grace has two versions—the first in gospel swing triplet style for all harps, and the second one for pedal harp using jazz harmony in regular ¾ time. I felt there were too many accidentals for lever harps to attempt. The pedal harp version can certainly be played on lever harp, too, if you are able to make the lever changes without delaying too long! A Bb can be substituted for A# in that one diminished chord in measure 17 if that helps. Another arrangement I did in traditional style is published by Afghan Press in the booklet “Seven Old Hymn Favorites” Plain and Fancy.”
It was difficult to accurately categorize this book, because it is ethnic, pop, jazzy, worship, and more. It’s just a neat book. We hope you enjoy it!
