Description
This is a Fantasia on a well-known song. It is both dramatic and rhythmic, containing cadenza-like passages, Habanera sections, and meter changes. Parts are dance-like with a temptation to tap your toes. It requires technical skill for the damping, rolled chords and rhythmic LH. It’s not that difficult to play, flows beautifully, and is a fun piece that audiences love. Pedal and lever changes indicated, some fingerings suggested. Years ago this was a familiar piece to most audiences, and we are glad to see that it is being used for a TX audition.
Augustin Lara (1897 – 1970) was a beloved Mexican composer who wrote over 600 compositions. Reinhardt Elster (1914 – 2015) was a gifted conductor and musician, comfortable on multiple instruments. He had an outstanding freelance career in New York, when a friend suggested he audition for the Metropolitan Opera. He was offered the position and remained for 10 years, receiving much adulation from composers and performers alike.
