Gary Schocker Harp Music
Gary Schocker is mainly known as a flutist, but is also a gifted harpist and pianist. His compositions for harp are in general for pedal harp. They are interesting to learn, play and listen to.
He was born into a musical family in Easton, Pennsylvania where he played his first piano recital at age 3. At age 10 he started flute, and at age 15 performed as a soloist with the New York Philharmonic. At 29 he filled in for Jean-Pierre Rampal on a few hours’ notification, playing the Mozart D Major Concerto complete with improvised cadenzas.
He has also written musicals, among them “Far from the Madding Crowd” and “The Awakening”.
Emily Mitchell says of Schocker’s harp writing, “He writes for the harp as a singing instrument, not unlike the flute. Instead of busily accompanying, or traditional right hand melody, left hand harmony, both hands shape the line.”
