Description
Baloo, Baleerie: This lullaby begins with the chorus based on the Scot’s word baloo – “lullaby”. It is an ancient song believed to have originated in the Shetlands. There is a recording of the lullaby made in 1949 on the Shetland Island of Bressay, housed in the BBC Glasgow Archives. It is, therefore, sometimes referred to as the Bressay Lullaby. In this arrangement, both Scottish Gaelic and English are combined. The Chorus is in Gaelic and the verses are in English except for the last phrase, which returns to the Gaelic, so appropriate to the lullaby.
Hush the Waves Are Rolling In: This lullaby is listed in “Lullaby! Heart Songs for Baby and Mama,” published in 1879. The arpeggios in the introduction imitate the titular breakers.
O, Can Ye Sew Cushions: This lullaby was collected by Robert Burns, editor for the second edition of “Scots Musical Museum,” published in 1796. Allegro sections alternate with subdued andante ones. ALL HARPS, LATE BEGINNER/EARLY INTERMEDIATE.
