Gulf Coast Criunniú – Pronounced Cree-New
June 10-12, 2022 in Houston
The Gulf Coast Cruinniú is a weekend gathering for those interested in Irish music. Cruinniú is the Irish word for “gathering”. It is a time to get together with fellow musicians to learn, have fun and play music. The class package will consist of 5 hours of progressive class time in a chosen instrument with a top level performer, an instructor concert and music sessions (group playing of tunes). All classes and the concert will we held on the campus of the University of St. Thomas and the sessions will be down the street at the Penny Whistle Pub. Concert tickets can be purchased separately.
Therese Honey will teach the harp classes. Therese is a specialist in Celtic and Early harps, with a background in classical pedal harp. She performs traditional music solo and as a member of Wyndnwyre, with an emphasis on the traditional music of Ireland, Scotland and Wales and 13th-century Medieval music. She has also performed with the Chieftains.
The harp class is for harpers who are comfortable playing at a reasonable tempo and play with correct basic technique. This class will explore how to play Irish tunes. It will look at the phrasing and techniques that make a tune sound Irish. Pieces will be chosen from a selection of Irish traditional dance tunes, airs and harpers’ tunes from the 17th and 18th centuries, tailored to suit intermediate to advanced players. Elements of Irish style and ideas for accompanying other instruments will also be discussed. We will use listening as a way to get a feel for the Irish sound. Written music will be provided. We would like to encourage all harpers and harpists to join us for a fun filled weekend. Irish music has become very popular and it can become a delightful addition to your repertoire.
